Hockley was initially settled by European immigrants in 1822. During the Civil War, Union troops briefly occupied the town, setting up a camp on the banks of Spring Creek. In 1871, the International-Great Northern Railroad laid down its tracks in Hockley, making it an important hub for cotton production in the area. Today, you can still see old cotton warehouses that dot the landscape around the town.
